Tuition hikes for Tuition-Bearing students at Cornell University, Princeton dormitries

NEW YORK — Tuition-bearing students attending Tuition Bearing colleges in New York and New Jersey were charged with felonies and could face up to four years in prison Thursday, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

In a news release, the office said the charges stem from a September 2017 incident that occurred on the Cornell campus in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

The incident involved students at two colleges who allegedly used cellphones to communicate with each other and with each others’ families and friends.

Authorities allege that a person with knowledge of the case contacted the FBI about the alleged cellphone use and notified them that a male student at the University of Central Florida in Florida had been charged with violating the school’s rules on cell phone use.

Cornell police arrested that student and charged him with “felony harassment,” which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison.

Cornell and the University did not immediately respond to CNN’s requests for comment.

The FBI was also contacted by Cornell and notified that the university had received information from the Nassau County, New York, Police Department about a student who allegedly “began to make and receive harassing phone calls to female students, including students in the New Brunswick dormitory,” according to a news report by the New York Times.

The Nassau State Police, meanwhile, was notified of the alleged incident, and “caught wind of it” and took action, the Times reported.

It’s unclear what role the Nassu State Police played in the investigation.

According to the Times, the New Jersey State Police and Nassau District Attorney’s office investigated the Nassaus County charges.
